Name OGV RM
Full name Ogg Video RealMedia
File extension .ogv .rm, .rmvb
MIME video/ogg application/vnd.rn-realmedia
Developed by Xiph.org RealNetworks
Type of format Compressed video Multimedia container format
Introduction OGV file is video file that uses the Xiph.Org's open source Ogg container format; may contain video streams that use one or more different codecs, such as Theora. Theora is a free lossy video compression format. It is distributed without licensing fees. RealMedia is a proprietary multimedia container format created by RealNetworks. Its extension is ".rm". It is typically used in conjunction with RealVideo and RealAudio and is used for streaming content over the Internet. Typically these streams are in CBR, but a container for VBR streams, named RMVB, has been developed.
Technical details The Theora video-compression format is essentially compatible with the VP3 video-compression format, consisting of a backward-compatible superset. Theora is a superset of VP3, and VP3 streams can be converted into Theora streams without recompression. Support of RealMedia is available in a few multimedia players for different architectures/platforms, including RealPlayer, the Real Alternative codec pack and the open source DAP firmware Rockbox.
