Name OGV M4V
Full name Ogg Video Raw MPEG-4
File extension .ogv .m4v
MIME video/ogg video/x-m4v
Developed by Xiph.org Apple Inc.
Type of format Compressed video Video container
Introduction OGV file is video file that uses the Xiph.Org's open source Ogg container format; may contain video streams that use one or more different codecs, such as Theora. Theora is a free lossy video compression format. It is distributed without licensing fees. The M4V file format is a video container format developed by Apple and is very similar to the MP4 format. The primary difference is that M4V files may optionally be protected by DRM copy protection. Apple uses M4V to encode video files in its iTunes Store.
Technical details The Theora video-compression format is essentially compatible with the VP3 video-compression format, consisting of a backward-compatible superset. Theora is a superset of VP3, and VP3 streams can be converted into Theora streams without recompression. Unauthorized reproduction of M4V files may be prevented using Apple's FairPlay copy protection. A FairPlay-protected M4V file can only be played on a computer authorized (using iTunes) with the account that was used to purchase the video.
