WEBP vs HEIC:
Name WEBP HEIC
Full name Weppy Image Format High Efficiency Image File Format
File extension .webp .heic
MIME image/webp image/heic
Developed by Google Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG)
Type of format Image format, Lossless/lossy compression algorithm Image Container Format
Introduction WebP is an image format employing both lossy and lossless compression. As a derivative of the VP8 video format, it is a sister project to the WebM multimedia container format. WebP-related software is released under a BSD license. As HEIC is a container format, it can contain still images and image sequences (where a file contains more than one single image) that are coded in different formats. Currently, these include HEVC and H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (and JPEG for thumbnail/secondary images), though other coding formats may be added in the future. The main filename extension is .heic (for HEVC codec).
Technical details Google has proposed using WebP for animated images as an alternative to the popular GIF format, citing the advantages of 24-bit color with transparency, combining frames with lossy and lossless compression in the same animation, and as well as support for seeking to specific frames. In Apple's implementation, for single images they have chosen the latter .heic filename extension (.heics for image sequence files) as the only one they will produce for photos, which indicates clearly that it went through HEVC encoding.
