HEIF vs DDS:
Name HEIF DDS
Full name High Efficiency Image File Format Microsoft Direct Draw Surface
File extension .heif .dds
MIME image/heif image/vnd.ms-dds
Developed by Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) Microsoft
Type of format Image Container Format Texture files
Introduction High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) is a file format for individual images and image sequences. It was developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and is defined by MPEG-H Part 12. In June 2017, Apple announced support for HEIF in macOS High Sierra and iOS 11. The DirectDraw Surface container file format (uses the filename extension DDS), is a Microsoft format for storing data compressed with the proprietary S3 Texture Compression (S3TC) algorithm, which can be decompressed in hardware by GPUs.
Technical details The HEIF specification also defines the means of storing High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC)-encoded intra images and HEVC-encoded image sequences in which inter prediction is applied in a constrained manner. The DirectDraw Surface format is useful for storing graphical textures and cubic environment maps as a data file, both compressed and uncompressed. The Microsoft Windows file extension for this data format is '.dds'.
