HEIC vs BMP:
|Full name||High Efficiency Image File Format||Microsoft Windows Bitmap|
|File extension||.heic||.bmp, .dib|
|Developed by||Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG)||Microsoft|
|Type of format||Image Container Format||Raster graphics|
|Introduction||As HEIC is a container format, it can contain still images and image sequences (where a file contains more than one single image) that are coded in different formats. Currently, these include HEVC and H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (and JPEG for thumbnail/secondary images), though other coding formats may be added in the future. The main filename extension is .heic (for HEVC codec).||The BMP file format, also known as bitmap image file or device independent bitmap (DIB) file format or simply a bitmap, is a raster graphics image file format used to store bitmap digital images, independently of the display device, especially on Microsoft Windows and OS/2 operating systems.|
|Technical details||In Apple's implementation, for single images they have chosen the latter .heic filename extension (.heics for image sequence files) as the only one they will produce for photos, which indicates clearly that it went through HEVC encoding.||The bitmap image file consists of fixed-size structures as well as variable-size structures appearing in a predetermined sequence. Many different versions of some of these structures can appear in the file, due to the long evolution of this file format.|
