BMP vs DPX:
Name BMP DPX
Full name Microsoft Windows Bitmap SMPTE Digital Moving Picture Exchange
File extension .bmp, .dib .dpx
MIME image/bmp, image/x-bmp application/octet-stream
Developed by Microsoft SMPTE
Type of format Raster graphics Image file formats
Introduction The BMP file format, also known as bitmap image file or device independent bitmap (DIB) file format or simply a bitmap, is a raster graphics image file format used to store bitmap digital images, independently of the display device, especially on Microsoft Windows and OS/2 operating systems. Digital Picture Exchange (DPX) is a common file format for digital intermediate and visual effects work and is an ANSI/SMPTE standard. DPX is the worldwide-chosen format for still frames storage in most Digital Intermediate post-production facilities and film labs.
Technical details The bitmap image file consists of fixed-size structures as well as variable-size structures appearing in a predetermined sequence. Many different versions of some of these structures can appear in the file, due to the long evolution of this file format. The DPX file format was originally derived from the Kodak Cineon open file format (.cin file extension) used for digital images generated by Kodak's original film scanner.
