Full name Microsoft Excel Binary File Format XML Paper Specification
File extension .xls .xps
MIME application/vnd.ms-excel application/vnd.ms-xpsdocument

Type of format Spreadsheet Document file format
Introduction Microsoft Excel up until 2007 version used a proprietary binary file format called Excel Binary File Format (.XLS) as its primary format. Excel 2007 uses Office Open XML as its primary file format, an XML-based format that followed after a previous XML-based format called "XML Spreadsheet". Open XML Paper Specification (also referred to as OpenXPS) is an open specification for a page description language and a fixed-document format. Microsoft developed it as the XML Paper Specification (XPS). In June 2009, Ecma International adopted it as international standard ECMA-388.
Technical details OpenOffice.org has created documentation of the Excel format. Since then Microsoft made the Excel binary format specification available to freely download. An XPS file is a ZIP archive using the Open Packaging Conventions, containing the files which make up the document. These include an XML markup file for each page, text, embedded fonts, raster images, 2D vector graphics, as well as the digital rights management information. The contents of an XPS file can be examined by opening it in an application which supports ZIP files.
