Introduction OGV file is video file that uses the Xiph.Org's open source Ogg container format; may contain video streams that use one or more different codecs, such as Theora. Theora is a free lossy video compression format. It is distributed without licensing fees. The Matroska Multimedia Container is an open standard free container format, a file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture, or subtitle tracks in one file. It is intended to serve as a universal format for storing common multimedia content, like movies or TV shows.
Technical details The Theora video-compression format is essentially compatible with the VP3 video-compression format, consisting of a backward-compatible superset. Theora is a superset of VP3, and VP3 streams can be converted into Theora streams without recompression. Matroska is similar in concept to other containers like AVI, MP4, or Advanced Systems Format (ASF), but is entirely open in specification, with implementations consisting mostly of open source software.
